The 5-panel urine drug test is the most common and is the federally mandated standard for all DOT
(Department of Transportation) drug testing programs (as per 49 CFR Part 40). It is also widely used
in non-DOT workplace drug testing due to its comprehensive coverage of commonly abused illicit drugs.
The 5-Panel Tests for the Following Classes of Drugs:
1. Marijuana Metabolites (THC): Detects the presence of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary
psychoactive component of cannabis. Metabolites can be detected for several days to weeks, depending on usage frequency and individual metabolism.
● Common Names: Cannabis, Pot, Weed, Grass, Hash, Dabs, Edibles.
2. Cocaine Metabolites: Detects benzoylecgonine, the primary metabolite of cocaine. Cocaine metabolites can typically be detected for 2-4 days after use.
● Common Names: Coke, Blow, Crack, Rock, Snow.
3. Amphetamines: Detects a class of stimulant drugs, including Amphetamine and Methamphetamine. Some panels may also detect MDMA (Ecstasy) and MDA (Sassaphras).
● Common Names: Speed, Uppers, Meth, Crystal, Ecstasy, Molly, Adderall, Ritalin (prescription stimulants).
4. Opioids (Opiates): Detects natural and semi-synthetic opioids derived from the opium poppy. The standard 5-panel typically screens for:
● Codeine
● Morphine
● Heroin Metabolite (6-AM)
● Note: Expanded opioid panels (often part of a 10-panel or custom panel) are necessary to detect synthetic opioids like Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Oxymorphone, and Fentanyl.
● Common Names: Opiates, Smack, China White, Oxy, Percs, Vikes, Dilaudid.
5. Phencyclidine (PCP): Detects PCP, a dissociative anesthetic with hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects. PCP can be detected for several days to weeks depending on usage.
● Common Names: Angel Dust, Hog, Love Boat, Peace Pill.
The 10-panel urine drug test is a broader screening that includes all the substances from the 5- panel, plus an additional five classes of drugs. This panel is commonly used in non-DOT workplace drug testing, particularly in industries where a more comprehensive screen is desired.
The 10-Panel Tests for the Following Classes of Drugs (5-Panel + 5 Additional):
● All 5 drugs from the 5-Panel (Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opioids, PCP)
● Plus the following 5 additional classes:
6. Barbiturates: A class of central nervous system depressants used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. They are highly addictive.
● Common Names: Barbs, Downers, Yellow Jackets, Reds, Blues (e.g., Amobarbital, Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital).
7. Benzodiazepines: A class of psychoactive drugs used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. They are commonly prescribed but also subject to abuse.
● Common Names: Benzos, Downers, Nerve Pills (e.g., Alprazolam (Xanax), Diazepam (Valium), Lorazepam (Ativan), Clonazepam (Klonopin).
8. Methadone: A synthetic opioid used as a pain reliever and in medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction. It is also subject to abuse.
● Common Names: Dollies, Fizzies, Wafer.
9. Propoxyphene: An opioid pain reliever (e.g., Darvon, Darvocet) that has largely been withdrawn from the market due to safety concerns but may still be detected if previously used.
● Common Names: Darvon, Darvocet.
10. MDMA (Ecstasy) / MDA (Sassaphras): While some 5-panel tests may include these, they are consistently part of a 10-panel test. These are synthetic drugs with stimulant and hallucinogenic properties, often associated with rave culture.
● Common Names: Ecstasy, Molly, X, Adam, Sass.
